The Jesuit High School Choral Program offers multiple levels of choir from beginning to advanced, as well as a variety of performance opportunities for our singers. There are 165 students currently enrolled in one of the four choirs. Our singers participate both curricularly and co-curricularly at seasonal concerts, festivals, school-wide liturgies, class masses, Athletics events, and a number of other on-campus events in support of our Advancement and Alumni Offices. And, the best part is, there is no prior experience necessary to join our Choral Program!
Men’s Chorus, also known as Choral Music, is the first year of a multi-level program designed for those students who are interested in developing both proper choral technique and a fundamental knowledge of music as participants in a vocal ensemble. Students will learn and apply basic music theory concepts, simple sight-singing skills, and other techniques and terms which will prepare them for further musical education in choir. Concert Choir is designed for those students who have already taken at least one year of Choral Music and are interested in continuing to develop both proper choral technique and knowledge of music as members of a vocal ensemble. Students will continue to learn and apply more advanced theory and sight-singing skills, techniques and terms which will enable them to continue a further musical education through choir.
This one-year course is designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score, particularly when it is performed within the context of the Liturgy. The course will seek to instill mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music, including chant and Western notation; intervals; scales and keys; chords; metric organization and rhythmic patterns.
